Association of Radiation Therapy Technologists of India [artti]
Radiotherapy is a multidisciplinary speciality that uses complex equipment and radiation sources to deliver dose to the planned treatment volume. The objective of the therapeutic dose to the delineated target volume keeping doses to surrounding normal tissues as low as practicable consistent with the clinical requirement. Radiotherapy technologist's play an important role in the procedural steps of radiotherapy practice and their contribution in particular are quite significant in treatment planning, patient simulation / verification treatment aid fabrication, treatment delivery and patient evaluation during the treatment.
The association of radiation therapy technologists of India was formed in the year 1996 with the efforts of Hyderabad radiation therapy technologists. There are about 1000 radiation therapy technologists working in the department of radiation oncology in India. The association was formed to bring all of them under one roof to provide a platform to express our frank opinion and share our experience with the colleagues.
The aims and objectives of our association are:
- Recognition of the profession.
- Developing the academic activities.
- Exchange of information between individual to help members keep abreast of the advances in technology.
- Nature of responsibility of the technologist.
- To conduct annual professional conferences at regional levels.

The first annual national conference of the association was held at Hyderabad on 17th of August 1997, under the chairmanship of Prof. Kakarala Subba Rao [padma Sri], Director of Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences , Hyderabad. Members from different parts of India participated in the conference; the one-day deliberation was followed by 5 guest lectures and 3 paper presentations by technologists. The organizing secretary was Mr.A. Shridhar, senior technologist from radiation oncology department of NIMS Punjagutta, Hyderabad.
The second annual national conference of the association was held on 7th November 1998 at Gujarat Cancer Research Institute, [GCRI] Ahmedabad. Under the chairman ship of DR. D.D.Patel, Director of GCRI Ahmedabad. The conference had 5 guest lectures and 8 paper presentation by technologists from different parts of India. The organizing secretary of this conference was Mr.A.R.Patel, senior technologist GCRI Ahmedabad.
The third annual national conference was held on 17th November 1999 the christening of the conference took place it was called ARTTICON -99 at meenakshi mission hospital and research center [MMHRC] Madurai, under the chairmanship of DR. Sethuraman Founder chairman of MMHRC Madurai. This conference already started to show improvements and developments of the technologists from various parts of the India because though it had 6 guest lectures it had 23 papers by technologists of which 8 were poster presentations from all over India, along with three panel discussions. The organizing secretary from this conference was Mr.Balasubramaniam, senior tech from MMHRC Madurai.
The fourth annual national conference ARTTICON2000 was held in Tata Memorial Hospital [TMH] in Mumbai on 1st of October 2000 succeeding the one day work shop on mould room techniques conducted by TMH under the chairmanship of Dr.K.A.Dinshaw, director of TMH. Here too we saw more number of technologists participating in the paper presentation. A total of 23 papers were presented in this conference too. The organising secretary for this conference was Mr. C.S.Telang technical officer department of radiation oncology, TMH. Mumbai.
The fifth annual national conference ARTTICON2001 is also going to be held in Mumbai at B.Y.L.NAIR CHARITABLE HOSPITAL [NAIR] on 23rd December 2001 under the patronship of DR. S.A.Dahanukar, dean of topiwala medical college and NAIR hospital. The association has arranged for a six day training program on radiation safety course along with the A.E.R.B. & R.P.A.D of B.A.R.C. preceding the conference from 18th December 2001 and 24th December 2001. interested candidates can get in touch with the organizing secretary Ms.Lakshmi.P.S.Iyer, senior technologist, department of radiation oncology, BYL Nair ch.
